VOKASI NEWS – UNAIR Nursing Students introduced vital signs equipment to elementary school children using English to improve health literacy and language skills.
The use of English is currently essential for global communication. Ideally, children should start learning English from an early age, especially at the elementary school level. To promote children’s health awareness, it is necessary to introduce medical equipment to reduce fear and enhance health literacy from an early age.
According to the EF English Proficiency Index (EF EPI) 2024, Indonesia ranks 80th out of 116 countries with a score of 468. This places Indonesia in the “low proficiency” category. It highlights the need to improve English skills across various segments of society.
To enhance English knowledge and introduce medical equipment to elementary school children, Team Group 10 of UNAIR Nursing Students held a social action program at the RT Community Hall of Graha Bunder Asri Housing Complex, Gresik. The team educated 10 elementary school children about vital signs equipment using English. This activity is part of the Nursing English course curriculum and reflects the community service commitment of fourth-semester students.
Team Group 10 consists of four students: Ellyta Maryamin, Lucky Agus Sagita, Alfina Dhamayanti, and Rini Dwi Aryani. The team was supervised by facilitating lecturer Ns. Hafna Ilmy Muhalla, S.Kep., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.M.B. The program not only introduced vital signs equipment but also aimed to improve the children’s English skills.
Educational Program Activities (Vital Signs Equipment)

- Pre-test to assess initial knowledge
- Main material delivery
- Post-test for comprehension evaluation
- Interactive question and answer session
- Experience sharing about children’s school life
Through this activity, the team expected to apply English language skills while learning about vital signs monitoring equipment.
Participant Enthusiasm and Engagement
Throughout the educational session, the participating children demonstrated high levels of enthusiasm. This was evident from their active responses to the moderators and presenters who guided the activities. To enliven the educational atmosphere, the activity facilitators organized sharing sessions accompanied by rewards for the most active and outstanding participants.
The program concluded with a group photo session with all the children who participated in this activity. This program is expected to provide positive impact on improving English language skills and health literacy among children in the Graha Bunder Asri Housing Complex, Gresik.
