Historic and Cultural Landmarks of Kampung Peneleh

Starting from the Jami’ Peneleh Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Surabaya, which has been a center of religious activity since colonial times. Then to the H.O.S. Tjokroaminoto Museum, the home of the “Teacher of Leaders,” where great figures such as Soekarno and Kartosoewirjo once studied. Not far from there stands Bung Karno’s Birthplace, where the first President of the Republic of Indonesia spent his childhood. There is also Langgar Dukur Kayu, an old mosque that retains its classic architecture.

In another corner, Sumur Jobong is a unique relic of the Majapahit kingdom that is believed to have historical value and mystical stories. Also located in the Peneleh district is the Peneleh European Cemetery, which is a complex of historic cemeteries that bears witness to the coming together of Eastern and Western culture. There is also Lodji Besar, which is breathtaking with its grandeur of colonial architecture. For an encounter with local culture, visit Rumah Batik, where one may witness how Surabaya’s trademarked batik is made and take it home as a memento.

Living Heritage and Culture of Kampung Peneleh

Aside from its rich history, Peneleh also appeals to the senses through its cozy, homey village-like setting. Narrow, decorated alleys, Instagram-friendly old houses, and the scent of local dishes such as lontong balap and rujak cingur only add to the experiential feel. During some periods, the village also hosts lively cultural festivals in the form of traditional arts performances, craft shows, and local food.

It is not merely seeing old buildings in the case of educational tourism in Kampung Peneleh. History comes alive here through guided tours which connect the history of how people lived and struggled in days gone by. Visitors are even allowed to touch traces from centuries back, see architectural features, and speak with locals who continue to maintain traditions. For students, this experience is much more interesting than reading history books. For families, this is an opportunity to introduce children to the cultural roots of the nation. Additionally, its strategic location near the city center, specifically at Jl. Makam Peneleh No. 46, Peneleh, Genteng District, Surabaya, makes this tourist spot easy to visit and access.
