Global Theory Integrating Local Practice: Navigating the EMI Era Through International Guest Lecture

VOKASI NEWS – English Diploma Program holds an international guest lecture with Universiti Sains Malaysia expert to discuss opportunities and challenges of English Medium Instruction (EMI) in the global era.

The English Diploma Program held an international guest lecture featuring a linguistic expert from Universiti Sains Malaysia on Monday, 20 April 2026. Carrying the theme “English Medium Instruction (EMI) in the Global Era,” the session explored both opportunities and challenges of EMI within vocational education. The lecture aimed to broaden students’ perspectives and prepare them to compete in an increasingly interconnected global workforce.

Inspiring Opening and Speaker Introduction

The session was moderated by Nur Jazlina Azka, an English Diploma student, who led the event with confidence and clarity. She introduced the keynote speaker, Dr. Irham, a senior lecturer at the School of Humanities, Universiti Sains Malaysia, and an expert in Medium of Instruction. Opening his presentation, Dr. Irham stated, “English has strong potential to shape a promising future,” setting an inspiring tone for the discussion.

EMI as a Gateway to Global Career Opportunities

During his presentation, Dr. Irham emphasized that while EMI poses challenges such as anxiety and comprehension difficulties, it should be viewed as a “privilege” that opens access to the global job market. He explained that English serves as a critical medium for career development, enabling individuals to grow from local contexts to international success. This perspective encouraged students to rethink English not merely as a basic skill, but as a strategic asset for future career advancement.

The lecture concluded with an engaging question-and-answer session, where students actively shared their experiences and challenges in applying EMI during their studies. This interaction provided practical insights from the expert on how to navigate the complexities of EMI, while also strengthening students’ theoretical understanding and professional competencies.

Strengthening Global Collaboration in Vocational Education

This collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia highlighted that challenges in EMI are not obstacles, but stepping stones toward future opportunities. Through guidance from Dr. Irham, students are expected to enhance their problem-solving skills, adapt to international standards, and emerge as competitive graduates in the global workforce.
