UNAIR Vocational Nursing Students Promote Eye Health Education

Eye care for children education by UNAIR Vocational Nursing students

VOKASI NEWS – Awareness of eye health should be developed from an early age. Based on this concern, Diploma III Nursing students from Universitas Airlangga conducted a health promotion activity entitled Eye Anatomy, Vision Process, and Eye Care for Children on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The activity was held at Al-Ishlah Mosque, Jl. Topaz V, Kembangan Village, Kebomas District, Gresik Regency, East Java Province. The program targeted children who regularly attended Qur’an learning sessions at the mosque. Approximately 25 children participated in the activity.

The program was organized by Group 2 of the Diploma III Nursing Program, consisting of Novia Dwi Aryanti, Putryana Waluika Salsabila Luthfiah, Gadis Rahayu Pratiwi, and Qismah Nuroniyah Hidayati. The topic was chosen because vision plays an important role in children’s learning and development. In addition, the increasing use of digital devices among school-age children may negatively affect eye health if not accompanied by healthy habits.
Therefore, early health education is important to increase children’s awareness of proper eye care.

Understanding Eye Anatomy and the Vision Process

Participants were introduced to the main parts of the eye, including the cornea, iris, pupil, lens, and retina. The educational session also explained how vision occurs, from light entering the eye to visual information being processed by the brain. The material was delivered using educational posters containing simple illustrations and explanations. Visual learning media helped participants understand the concepts more easily. Children were also
encouraged to ask questions during the session.

According to the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, visual impairment remains a health issue that requires preventive and promotive efforts from an early age (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2019). Therefore, understanding the functions of the eye and learning how to maintain eye health are important for children. The educational content focused on both knowledge and healthy daily habits that support good vision.

Eye Health Education and Prevention of Vision Problems

In addition to learning about eye anatomy, participants were introduced to common vision problems in children, including myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and eye strain. Explanations were provided regarding the effects of excessive smartphone and digital device use on eye health. Participants also learned the importance of maintaining a proper reading distance, studying under adequate lighting, and limiting screen time. The material was delivered using simple language appropriate for the children’s age.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), eye health education plays an important role in preventing vision problems and increasing awareness among children (WHO, 2021). To reinforce the material, participants received educational leaflets that could be reviewed at home. Consistently practicing simple healthy habits can help maintain good vision throughout life.

Participants’ Enthusiasm During the Educational Activity

The activity was conducted through interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions. Many participants showed curiosity by asking questions about eye functions and ways to maintain healthy vision. Their enthusiasm was also evident during the pre-test and post-test sessions facilitated by the nursing students. The post-test was designed as a crossword puzzle containing questions related to the material presented. Participants who
achieved the highest post-test scores received prizes as appreciation for their efforts.

One of the Qur’an teachers at Al-Ishlah Mosque expressed appreciation for the activity. “This program is very beneficial because it helps children understand eye health through an interesting and easy-to-understand approach. The material is relevant to children’s needs, especially regarding the increasing use of digital devices. It is hoped that the knowledge gained can be applied in daily life so that children’s eye health can be maintained,” the teacher stated.

This health promotion activity is expected to improve children’s knowledge and awareness regarding the importance of maintaining eye health from an early age. Through healthy vision, children can learn more effectively and enjoy a better quality of life in the future.
