Adolescents at Gresik Kota Baru (GKB) Park Learn Emergency Communication Through the Talking by Order Method

VOKASI NEWS – Emergency situations can occur at any time, ranging from traffic accidents and fires to cases in which someone suddenly loses consciousness. However, not everyone knows how to report these incidents correctly. To improve adolescents’ preparedness, D-III Nursing students from Universitas Airlangga conducted an emergency communication education program using the Talking by Order method at Gresik Kota Baru (GKB) Park.

The education program was conducted in June 2026 at Gresik Kota Baru (GKB) Park. The activity was part of a health promotion project organized by Group 7, consisting of Sheila Intan Nur Safitri, Dika Ayu Pratiwi, Lutvia Ayu Salviana, and Yasa Gita Revika under the supervision of Dr. Hafna Ilmy Muhalla, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.M.B. Furthermore, the program targeted adolescents living in the GKB area through an interactive and educational approach.

Adolescents were selected because they are considered an active group with the ability to respond quickly during emergencies. In addition, they can play an important role in helping themselves and supporting others within the community.

Effective Communication Speeds Up Emergency Response

The first session introduced the concept of emergency communication. Emergency communication refers to the process of delivering information quickly, clearly, and accurately to help responders make appropriate decisions during critical situations. According to Wardahni (2024), effective communication plays an important role in improving patient safety and reducing errors in emergency services.

Participants learned that emergency reports do not need to be lengthy. Instead, they should include essential information about the incident, location, victim’s condition, and the type of assistance required. As a result, responders can determine appropriate actions more efficiently.

“The main purpose of this activity is to train adolescents to communicate information quickly, accurately, and calmly when facing emergency situations,” said one of the project team members.

Learning Structured Emergency Communication

The following session introduced the Talking by Order method. This method teaches participants to communicate information in a logical sequence so that no important details are overlooked.

Participants also learned the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) framework, which is widely used in healthcare settings. According to Kartika (2024), SBAR improves the quality of information transfer by providing a systematic and easy-to-understand communication structure.

To strengthen participants’ understanding, the facilitators conducted simple emergency simulations. During these activities, participants practiced reporting emergency situations using the correct sequence of information. Consequently, participants became more familiar with the steps required when contacting emergency services.

Knowing Emergency Numbers Saves Valuable Time

The education program also introduced several important emergency contact numbers. These included 112 for integrated emergency services, 119 for emergency medical services, 118 for ambulance services, and 110 for police assistance.

Knowledge of emergency resources is essential for adolescents. According to Tseng (2024), educational interventions regarding emergency services improve adolescents’ knowledge and readiness to seek assistance during critical situations.

Besides limited awareness of emergency numbers, panic often becomes a major barrier to effective emergency reporting. Therefore, participants were encouraged to communicate calmly, clearly, and systematically whenever an emergency occurs.

Through this activity, adolescents are expected to become better prepared to respond to emergency situations. Ultimately, effective communication skills not only accelerate emergency response but also contribute to saving lives.
