VOKASI NEWS – The use of picture cards or flashcards is now a very effective educational trend for improving foreign language comprehension. Attractive visuals help learners understand words or phrases more quickly through the enjoyable process of identifying images.
Moreover, this method is not limited to vocabulary memorization, but also touches on an important aspect of linguistic studies, namely grammar. The correct sentence structure on the cards is the key for students to communicate fluently in social settings.
Analysis of Interrogative Sentence Patterns
An intensive study was conducted at Airlangga University to analyze how question sentences are structured in English learning materials. The main focus of this analysis covers basic elements such as subjects, verbs, objects, complements, and adverbials in each sentence.
Furthermore, the research, which ran from February to June 2025, found various variations in question patterns that often appeared. Sidarta Prassetyo, the activity supervisor, provided guidance on categorizing question types to ensure they met good pedagogical standards.
Application of Closed and Open Questions
Generally, questions in flashcards are divided into two broad categories: closed yes/no questions and open questions. Yes/no questions usually begin with auxiliary verbs such as do or the modal can to ask about ability.
This structure is very important for training students to respond quickly with answers that have positive or negative polarity. A real example of the use of this pattern is the sentence “Do you usually have lunch?”, which is often found on practice cards.
Exploring Information Through Wh-Questions
In addition to closed questions, the use of the 5W1H pattern, such as who, what, where, when, why, and how, is also analyzed in detail. This pattern serves to extract more specific and in-depth information from the interlocutor in a communication.
For instance the question word where, for example, serves as an indicator of location or place in a complete interrogative sentence structure. Meanwhile, the question word why emphasizes the reason or cause of an event being discussed.
Practical Benefits in the Workplace
This grammatical structure analysis provides significant added value for the development of more effective and contextual learning media. The use of flashcards with the correct grammar has been proven to improve the quality of internal communication in professional work environments.
In addition, playing cards at the office can be a fun way to improve English skills without feeling like you are studying. The systematic structure of each card helps individuals recognize sentence patterns automatically through repeated practice.
