Eye Health Education Improves Community Awareness

VOKASI NEWS – Students of the Diploma III Nursing Program, Faculty of Vocational Studies, Universitas Airlangga, conducted a community service activity focusing on eye health education at Perumtas 3 Block K.8/04, Kepuh Kemiri, Tulangan, Sidoarjo, on Friday (April 17, 2026). The program aimed to increase public awareness and knowledge about the importance of maintaining eye health in the digital era.

The activity involved 13 participants. It featured health education sessions, interactive discussions, a myth-and-fact game using a spin wheel, and the distribution of educational leaflets and posters. The materials covered common eye disorders, the impact of prolonged digital device use, healthy lifestyle habits for eye care, and the implementation of the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain.

Nino Gilang Samudra, the project leader, explained that the increasing use of digital devices has become one of the main concerns related to eye health. “Prolonged screen exposure without adequate rest may increase the risk of eye fatigue, dry eyes, and visual problems. Through this educational activity, participants are expected to become more aware of healthy habits that can help maintain optimal vision,” he said.

Knowledge Improvement Among Participants

The facilitators conducted a pre-test before the educational session to assess participants’ initial knowledge of eye health. After the session, the facilitators administered a post-test to evaluate the effectiveness of the educational intervention.

The evaluation showed an improvement in participants’ knowledge. The average pre-test score was 91.5, while the average post-test score increased to 93.8. Moreover, six participants achieved higher scores after the intervention. Five participants maintained the same scores, while two participants recorded slightly lower scores.

These findings indicate that eye health education can improve public understanding of preventive eye care practices. Furthermore, the results are consistent with previous community service studies showing that educational interventions significantly enhance knowledge and awareness related to eye health promotion and disease prevention (Mahayani et al., 2025).

In addition to the educational presentation, participants actively joined an interactive myth-and-fact game about eye health. The activity encouraged discussion and allowed participants to reflect on daily habits that may affect their vision.

Promoting Healthy Lifestyle Habits

The program not only focused on increasing knowledge but also encouraged participants to adopt healthier daily habits. The facilitators introduced practical strategies to support eye health. These strategies included limiting screen time, ensuring proper lighting while reading or working, and consuming foods rich in vitamins A, C, E, and omega-3 fatty acids (Yuwono et al., 2025).

Overall, the community service activity helped participants gain a better understanding of the importance of maintaining eye health from an early stage. Therefore, continuous health education is expected to play an important role in preventing visual impairment and improving the overall quality of life within the community.
