Green Skills: A Pack of Skills For Today’s Youth

VOKASI NEWS – International Youth Day, celebrated every August 12, serves as a reminder of the immense potential and power of young people worldwide. This year’s theme, “Green Skills Youth: Toward A Sustainable World,” highlights the critical importance of equipping today’s youth with green skills in the face of rapid climate change and other environmental challenges. By fostering awareness and understanding of green skills, we can empower the next generation to build a sustainable and resource-efficient society.

The Urgency & Understanding Green Skills

Green skills encompass a broad range of knowledge, abilities, values, and attitudes necessary for individuals to live, develop, and contribute to a sustainable world. As climate change continues to impact our planet, it is crucial that young people possess the skills required to tackle environmental issues and promote sustainable living. By nurturing environmentally sustainable skills, we not only ensure a better future for our youth but also lay the foundation for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.

A recent survey conducted by U-Reporters by UNICEF Indonesia revealed that less than a quarter of young people are familiar with green skills, and only 32% express a willingness to learn more. This knowledge gap poses a significant challenge as we strive to lower our carbon footprint, protect biodiversity, and advance sustainable development. If current trends persist, more than 60% of young individuals may lack the necessary skills to thrive in the emerging green economy by 2030. It is crucial, therefore, to equip young people with environmental skills, empowering them to become catalysts for change and drive the transition towards a greener future.

Overcoming Challenges and Building Momentum

While the importance of skills is undeniable, challenges remain. Limited understanding and high investment costs deter many young individuals from pursuing opportunities in this field. Uncertainty surrounds the future prospects of green jobs in Indonesia, further discouraging potential candidates. However, we must persevere in our efforts to promote conceptthrough grassroots movements and initiatives. By raising awareness and engaging stakeholders and policymakers, we can expedite the development of skills necessary for a successful transition to an environmentally economy.

As we commemorate International Youth Day, let us recognize the significance of green skills in shaping a sustainable future. By empowering today’s youth with the knowledge and abilities to address environmental challenges, we pave the way for a greener and more resilient planet. It is our collective responsibility to invest in green skills, ensuring that young individuals are equipped to lead the charge towards a sustainable world.
