VOKASI NEWS – The English Diploma students are working on a bilingual magazine book project that features articles on various topics.
It sounds like an exciting and engaging project that will allow them to showcase their writing skills and creativity. In this project, students’ main concern is women’s icons. So, all of the contents are related to the woman figure.
Becoming the woman icon of the year, Niki Zefanya looks adorable on the students’ magazine’s cover. Aside from Niki, students also talk about Anne Hathaway, Victoria Beckham, and Bapak Habibie’s wife, Ibu Ainun. The students focus on a timeless article which will not be outdated because a magazine is totally different from a newspaper that consists of the up-to-date issues.
It was such an interesting and fun experience, yet challenging. Students have been through ups and downs. The process takes approximately a full semester, which is not a short time. It needs a lot of dedication and preparation, including correlation between each topic mentioned in the magazine.
The Use of English Lessons in Making Bilingual Magazine Book Project
The students definitely faced a lot of difficulties, since it was their first-timer experience. Starting from difficulty in finding a suitable context to writing while translating their own magazine’s article. Additionally, student magazines consist of five different types of features. The most challenging part is students have to follow the rules of each type of feature format that is provided in Feature Translation class.
In addition to making the article, translating the two different language structures needs extra attention. So that’s why in a context like this, translation lessons in English studies are very important. Moreover, the text should be communicative since it is an entertainment magazine. It is important to have students’ own writing tone, which sounds both natural and catchy.

After facing difficulty in content making, it supposedly deals with editing layout, which also takes time to find a suitable concept. It can be seen through how many times changing the whole design. Students are also supposed to consider the layout, text, and picture replacement. In this context, Application Computer lessons about editing in English studies work.
Lastly, creating students’ own bilingual magazines was a memorable project ever, since students have to show both the creative and critical side of thinking. By making this project, it hopes that students have a better understanding, especially in writing article features, along with how to place a good arrangement of layout editing.
