The Impact of Health Education on Housewives’ Knowledge of Proper and Safe Medication Administration in Kebomas, Gresik

VOKASI NEWS – Appropriate medication administration is essential for achieving optimal therapeutic outcomes and minimizing the risk of medication-related complications. Nevertheless, medication errors remain common in household settings, particularly among housewives who are primarily responsible for managing their families’ healthcare.

Frequent errors include incorrect dosing, premature discontinuation of treatment, and inadequate awareness of potential adverse drug reactions. Given their central role in family health management, enhancing housewives’ knowledge of safe and appropriate medication use is of considerable importance.

To address this issue, a community-based health education program was conducted on April 16, 2026, at Jl. Topaz 5, Kebomas, Gresik. The program involved approximately 30 housewives and aimed to improve their understanding of proper medication administration. Participants first completed a pre-test to assess their baseline knowledge, followed by an interactive educational session incorporating lectures, printed leaflets, medication demonstration boards, group discussions, and practical demonstrations. The program concluded with a post-test to evaluate changes in participants’ knowledge following the intervention.

The educational content emphasized the Seven Rights of Medication Administration, including the right patient, right medication, right dose, right time, right route, right documentation, and right education. The facilitators also introduced participants to the major routes of medication administration, including oral, parenteral, topical, inhalational, and rectal administration

The facilitators emphasized accurate dosing, appropriate timing, and correct administration techniques to minimize medication errors and improve treatment safety. In addition, the program highlighted common medication-related errors encountered in home settings and provided practical strategies for their prevention.

Pengetahuan Peserta Meningkat Setelah Edukasi

Participants demonstrated a high level of engagement throughout the educational program by actively participating in discussions and practical demonstrations. Comparison of the pre-test and post-test results indicated a substantial improvement in participants’ knowledge.

Prior to the intervention, many participants had limited understanding of the principles of safe medication administration. Following the educational session, they demonstrated greater comprehension of appropriate medication practices and the safety measures required to ensure effective medication use within the household.

In conclusion, the health education intervention effectively improved housewives’ knowledge of proper and safe medication administration and promoted more rational medication use. Enhanced knowledge can strengthen household medication management and reduce the incidence of preventable medication errors.

Sustained implementation of community-based health education programs is therefore recommended to reinforce safe medication practices. Furthermore, healthcare professionals and university students should continue to support these initiatives through ongoing public education and advocacy for the rational and safe use of medicines.
