VOKASI NEWS – Educators should introduce respiratory health to children from an early age because it is an essential component of overall well-being. By understanding how the respiratory system functions and learning healthy daily habits, children can develop greater awareness of disease prevention and maintain healthy lungs throughout their lives. Health education in elementary schools is considered an effective strategy to improve health literacy and encourage healthy behaviors among school-aged children (Amien & Putra, 2025).
As part of a community service program, Diploma III Nursing students from the Faculty of Vocational Studies, Universitas Airlangga organized a health education session at MIS Miftahul Ulum Tlogoagung, Kembangbahu District, Lamongan Regency, on February 28, 2026. The activity involved students from Grades IV to VI and aimed to enhance their knowledge of the respiratory system while encouraging positive behaviors to maintain lung health.
Project-Based Learning Hadirkan Edukasi yang Interaktif
The educational program adopted the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approach, which emphasizes active student participation, collaboration, creativity, and meaningful learning experiences (Guo et al., 2020; Selasmawati & Lidyasari, 2023). Rather than relying solely on lectures, the facilitators engaged students in various interactive learning activities that made the educational process both enjoyable and memorable.
The session covered the structure and function of the respiratory organs, the mechanism of breathing, and practical ways to maintain healthy lungs. Students learned the importance of avoiding cigarette smoke exposure, maintaining environmental cleanliness, practicing healthy lifestyles, and protecting their respiratory system from preventable diseases.
To create an engaging learning atmosphere, the educational team utilized visual presentations, animated videos, interactive discussions, question-and-answer sessions, an educational “Twinkle” song about the respiratory system, and a picture-guessing game. These interactive activities encouraged students to participate actively throughout the session and reinforced the concepts introduced earlier.
Evaluasi Mengukur Peningkatan Pemahaman Siswa
To evaluate the effectiveness of the educational intervention, students completed a pre-test before the session and a post-test after the activity. This evaluation aimed to assess the improvement in students’ understanding of respiratory anatomy, breathing mechanisms, and healthy behaviors that support lung function.
Throughout the program, the students demonstrated high enthusiasm and active participation. They confidently answered questions, shared their ideas during discussions, enthusiastically participated in educational games, and sang together during the respiratory system learning session. Their positive responses indicated that interactive educational methods can significantly enhance students’ interest and comprehension of health-related topics.

The implementation of Project-Based Learning also encouraged students to think critically and apply the knowledge they had acquired in their daily lives. Interactive learning strategies, including educational games, songs, visual media, and discussions, have been shown to improve student engagement, conceptual understanding, and learning motivation, consistent with previous findings (Guo et al., 2020; Selasmawati & Lidyasari, 2023).

Overall, this community service activity successfully promoted respiratory health awareness among elementary school students. By integrating enjoyable and participatory learning methods, the program not only improved students’ understanding of the respiratory system but also encouraged them to adopt healthier behaviors that support long-term lung health. Similar educational initiatives can help create healthier school environments and encourage children to become more aware of the importance of maintaining respiratory health from an early age.
