GBA Adolescents Learn Emergency Communication Through the Talking by Order Method

VOKASI NEWS – Emergency situations can occur at any time, ranging from traffic accidents and fires to cases where someone suddenly loses consciousness. However, not everyone knows how to report such incidents properly. To improve adolescents’ emergency preparedness, D-III Nursing students from Universitas Airlangga conducted emergency communication education at Gresik New City Park. The education was delivered using the Talking by Order method to enhance participants’ understanding of effective emergency communication.

The emergency communication education activity was held in June 2026 at the the Gresik New City Park, Security Post. The activity was part of a health promotion project designed by Group 7, consisting of Sheila Intan Nur Safitri, Dika Ayu Pratiwi, Lutvia Ayu Salviana, and Yasa Gita Revika. The project was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Hafna Ilmy Muhalla, S.Kep., Ns., M.Kep., Sp.Kep.M.B. The program targeted adolescents living in the the Gresik New City Park area and was conducted using an interactive and educational approach. Adolescents were selected as participants because they are considered an active group and capable of responding quickly to emergency situations. They also have an important role in helping themselves and others within their community.

Effective Communication Speeds Up Emergency Response

The first topic presented focused on the concept of communication in emergency situations. Emergency communication is the process of delivering information quickly, clearly, and accurately to assist responders in making appropriate decisions during critical situations. Effective communication has been shown to play an important role in improving patient safety and reducing errors in emergency services (Wardahni, 2024).

Participants learned that emergency information does not need to be lengthy. Instead, it should include essential details such as the incident, location, victim’s condition, and the type of assistance required. Clear information enables responders to determine the most appropriate action more efficiently.

“The main purpose of this activity is to train adolescents to communicate information quickly, accurately, and calmly when facing emergency situations,” said one of the project team members.

Learning to Communicate in a Structured Way

The next session introduced the Talking by Order method. This method teaches participants how to deliver information in a sequential manner so that no important details are overlooked.

Participants were also introduced to the SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) framework, which is widely used in healthcare settings. According to Kartika (2024), the SBAR method improves the quality and effectiveness of information transfer by providing a systematic and easy-to-understand communication structure.

Through simple simulations, participants practiced reporting emergency situations using the correct sequence of information. These simulations helped participants understand the steps required when contacting emergency services.

Know Emergency Numbers Before They Are Needed

The education program also included information about important emergency contact numbers, including 112 for integrated emergency services, 119 for emergency medical services, 118 for ambulance services, and 110 for police assistance.

Knowledge of emergency resources is essential for adolescents. Educational interventions regarding access to emergency services have been shown to improve adolescents’ knowledge and readiness to seek assistance during critical situations (Tseng, 2024).

In addition to limited awareness of emergency numbers, panic is one of the main barriers to effective emergency reporting. Therefore, participants were encouraged to practice delivering information calmly, clearly, and systematically.

Through this activity, adolescents are expected to become better prepared to respond to emergency situations. Effective communication skills not only help accelerate emergency response but may also contribute to saving lives.
