VOKASI NEWS – Fieldwork practice experience was the right time for students to deepen their ability and knowledge in the field work directly. That experience was experienced by one of the group students from the Vocational Faculty UNAIR. Students had experienced the amazing fieldwork practice experience at Gen FM Surabaya.
The students were intrigued by the family culture at Gen FM after being an intern for approximately one month. Since Gen FM is the youth generation’s favourite radio in Surabaya, students figured that having an internship there was the right place for them to get a deeper insight into the radio industry. Moreover, Gen FM is also known for its exciting programs and up-to-date songs.

One of the students was an intern in the Radio Advertising team that focuses on creating client advertising scripts. So, students have the opportunity to write scripts for broadcasters who will be advertised through the radio. But besides that, students also did scheduling twitter posts, recording advertisements through voice over, as well as taking part in the “Salah Sambung” program (playing pranks on people over the phone). The students also had the opportunity to participate in offline company events. It is beneficial for students to strengthen relationships and build friendships with employees at Gen FM.
Challenges During the Internship
Writing a script for a client is not a simple job. To make it as informative as possible, students must also ensure that all of the client’s material is conveyed well. Therefore, it was a challenge when students were faced with a task that students had never done before. However, the students’ seniors and mentors, who are like their own brothers and sisters, are always ready and willing to provide advice and guidance to help students overcome these challenges.
What the Students Learnt from the Internship
The students gained deeper insights into the radio creative industry and it has helped them significantly with students’ career planning. There, students developed a better understanding of the career path of the radio industry through the internship, helping them to make an informed career decision. The students’ biggest takeaway would be the new long-term relationships and connections which students had forged with their colleagues at Gen FM Surabaya.
